LEG 1
This years RMR was a classic, we had almost every condition thrown at us! The fleet set off from the Oban sailing club line under the watchful eye of race officer Phil Preston, it was a run out of the bay and the wind headed the fleet as soon it passed Maiden Island, half way across the Firth of Lorne there was a dramatic change in the weather, 30-35knots hit the fleet bang on the nose causing frantic reefing and led to several retirals, undeterred the fleet smashed its way up the sound of Mull , it was not till the leaders arrived a Lochaline that the wind started to ease, by the time the leaders reached the finish outside Tobermory it was brilliant sunshine and a light breeze. Aunt Jessie the J125 steered by Jon Fitzgerald sailed a superb leg and duly won the Mishnish bucket!
LEG 2 The fleet woke on Saturday to a flat clam and Phil Preston rightly decided to motor the fleet along the coast of Mull and set a start line near Bloody Bay, this gave us all a glorious sail under spinnaker to Bunnessan. How much better can it get being surrounded by the most stunning scenery our coasts have to offer. A Ceilidh was held in the village hall, which many of the competitors enjoyed till the wee small hours.
LEG 3
The fleet had quite an uncomfortable night with several boats dragging their anchors, by the time the start arrived the wind was well up to 35 knots and still rising, gusts of 50 knots and big seas sent many to the shore.
Possibly one of the windiest RMR we have had in recent years but nonetheless a very enjoyable one.
